Giambologna, a renowned Italian sculptor of the late 16th century, created the incredible statue known as Appennino. This work of art is half-human and half-mountain and stands impressively at 10.7m above the ground in Tuscany’s Villa di Pratolino.
The statue that stands before us harbors a fascinating secret – concealed within it are chambers with diverse purposes that animate it. Gushing forth from an underground stream, the monster situated beneath the statue’s left hand ejects water. There is speculation that a fireplace lies within the head of the statue, and when ignited, smoke emanates from its nostrils, adding to its impressiveness. This colossus is indeed a marvel to behold.
You can find the statue situated within the grounds of Villa Dermidoff Park. It’s available for viewing every Saturday and Sunday from 10am until 7pm until October comes to a close.
