Archie, a senior Arctic fox who lost his sight, was left at a dog shelter in Colorado at the age of eight. It’s unclear whether his previous owners were unable to provide proper care for him or simply didn’t want him anymore.
Originally from Colorado, this fox found himself at a rescue center in Minnesota that he didn’t enjoy. He preferred to stay hidden and didn’t want to interact with other foxes. Eventually, he was transferred to the Arctic Fox Daily Wildlife Rescue, which is a two-part program. Firstly, they provide a permanent home for captive-bred and non-releasable foxes. Upon Archie’s arrival at the Arctic Fox Daily Wildlife Rescue, he displayed a distinct shyness. However, founder Kimberly DeFisher shared that Archie has since come out of his shell. Kimberly has noticed that when she uses the word “treat” instead of “touch,” Archie understands and allows her to touch him.
According to Kimberly, who spoke to GeoBeats Animals, Archie has the habit of bumping into things a few times but he is well aware of his limitations as he was born without vision. Additionally, Lulu, Archie’s partner, keeps him amused and happy. Every now and then, Archie and Lulu get together with another pair of foxes named Tundra and Cleo for some playful activities at the shelter.
Many individuals inquire about my dedication towards animals that are often overlooked and deemed unimportant. However, witnessing the joy and contentment that comes with providing them with a fulfilling life has only fueled my determination to improve Archie’s wellbeing. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience, surpassing my initial expectations, and seeing Archie thrive brings me immense satisfaction.
According to Kimberly, the animals she takes care of do not possess the same natural instincts as their wild counterparts. They struggle to withstand harsh weather conditions and find enough food on their own. Additionally, she mentioned that Archie, the Arctic fox, is nearing ten years old, which is a typical lifespan for his species. To ensure that he spends his remaining years content and fulfilled, Kimberly is providing him with the best possible care. She expressed her gratitude and privilege in developing a bond with him.
