Riding the Waves: A Photographer’s Adventure Capturing the Beauty of Lake Erie’s Power

When a storm is on the horizon, most people seek refuge indoors. However, Trevor Pottelberg, a talented photographer from Ontario, has a different approach. While he enjoys taking photos of landscapes, animals, and astrophotography, his true passion lies in capturing the power of waves. Living close to Lake Erie, he often takes advantage of the opportunity to fly over when he hears of an incoming storm, anticipating an exhilarating adventure.

Despite the challenging weather conditions with wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour, Pottelberg persevered to take these stunning photos. He strategically positioned his equipment close to the ground to withstand the elements and capture the awe-inspiring power and magnificence of the enormous waves emerging from Lake Erie.

According to Pottelberg, the intensity of the storm ignites his passion to create new pieces of art. Unlike most people who prefer to take refuge during strong storms, he looks forward to confronting the elements.

Pottelberg captured the beauty of stormy waves in many different weather conditions, including during sunsets. Some of his photos showcase a stunning contrast between the bright orange sky and the chilly blue water spray. In other shots, the ominous deep blue sky adds a new level of intensity to the images.

Despite the risks involved in capturing these pictures, Pottelberg deems it important to showcase the beauty of nature. He acknowledges his permanent nerve damage as a result of storm-chasing but considers it a worthwhile sacrifice if people appreciate his work. The appreciation he receives from individuals who admire his photographs from the comfort and safety of their own homes is the ultimate form of compliment for him.
