Katy Perry surprised fans with her fashion choice at the 2022 Met Gala, as she usually dons over-the-top costumes. This time, she opted for an asymmetrical Oscar de la Renta gown with sheer black lace and a short skirt beneath its bustled train. Perry completed her leggy look with see-through elbow-length gloves, a braided bun, clear heels, and Victorian diamond earrings worth $425,000. Despite the unexpected change, Perry had previously hinted at trying something different for the event.
Last month, the pop star declared that she won’t be going for her usual kooky and colorful look. Instead, she plans to surprise her fans by playing a whole different card. She even joked about showing up in a suit of armor or sending someone else in her place. In line with this, she wore a sheer black lace fabric over a structural skirt that gracefully flowed into a ruffled train. This was captured by Getty Images.
The famous singer effortlessly embodied the Met Gala’s “gilded glamour” dress code while also paying tribute to the event’s “In America” theme. Despite Tom Ford’s recent criticism of the Gala’s increasingly costume-like red carpet and Perry’s previous outfits, the superstar still made an appearance and may have even earned Ford’s approval this year. According to an excerpt from Amy Odell’s upcoming biography of Anna Wintour, Ford expressed that attending the exhibition about the 18th century used to be an occasion for stylish individuals to wear beautiful clothes without necessarily appearing like they were from that era or dressing like a hamburger, arrived in a van, or struggling to sit down due to wearing a chandelier.
According to Page Six Style, Perry mentioned that she plans to switch up her style this year. However, it seems like the pop star is not yet ready to let go of her costume obsession. On a recent Disney night episode of “American Idol,” Perry appeared as Ariel from “The Little Mermaid.” Her costume included a tail which caused her to stumble while walking.
